In the third decade of the 21st century, the most sought-after deliberation is pertaining to the rise of individuals who do not even encompass a tad bit of a competent moral compass.
In actuality, it is a wasted measure to keep reverberating the litany of people (the ignorant and ones without virtue): may they be the local school board member, a district councilor, a representative in the national legislature, or even the head of the government.
However, it is imperative to keep reiterating the basic tenets of classical liberalism: adherence to one’s individual liberty; a free and fair application of law—pervasion of the Magna Carta in totality; and, most important, institutions that safeguard the existence of all—may they be from differing faith, gender, age, prestige, status, and cultural groups. In simpler terms, a humanistic approach.
For many, the aforementioned ideas may just be meager talking points; sadly, the reflection of recent elections illustrates the mood of the body politic—most have lost faith in the very institution considered to protect the ones in the periphery of the society both economically and socially. Yes, these ideas are for the betterment of all. Nevertheless, why has sectarianism prevailed at this juncture of time?
My blunt assessment is that if the global plebiscite is given the option vis-à-vis the nature of the head of state: an autocrat or a consensus-based, pluralistic, liberal democrat. The ultimate verdict is evidentiary; regrettably, in most of the instances, the former will prevail over the latter. This predicament exemplifies the “bad” in human nature; we are innately the antithesis of liberalism.
We—the society collectively—have normalized the pervasive angst, malice, and animosity towards people of contrasting ideas, backgrounds, and views by constantly berating or belittling them, whilst many do not even expect to see the light of the subsequent day.
The “bad” in the society can be compartmentalized into three categories: the overt wealth disparity, ethnonationalism, and chauvinism. An important notion to denote is that the three denigrative phenomena have consistently percolated to each and every nation-state—regardless of its governmental mechanism being a plural democracy, a theocratic nation, or even a one-party state. As a result, the predicament cannot be deemed as a consequence developed due to the dogma of a certain individual or political party in power; rather, it is the innate discrepancy in human nature, resulting in the state of deprivation in the third decade of the 21st century. The very exemplification of the human travesty is amplified due to the great technological evolution in communication in recent decades—if only the shift in communication had not transpired, the fringe (who are disturbed pertaining to the global discourse for the likes of me) would be even more minuscule in number and labelled as traitors of the “status quo.”.
The tête-à-tête around the global polity, social gatherings, and families can be viewed as that of the one on the lines of the communiqué of the Nazi party in Berlin or the Communists in Moscow; the aristocracy of the Middle Ages; and the systemic misogyny in all societies—transmogrifying the other half into becoming subservient whilst extolling the moral superiority in meager deliberations.
That said, with the gargantuan rise in wealth amongst the few and a considerable shift of individuals from the lower strata to the middle strata, the implications of the increase in prosperity (attributed to globalization) have equally transcended the mind to be malignantly homogeneous—encapsulating it with the abject repugnance towards the minorities of any kind—and, most importantly, a potent trend of regressive outlooks towards institutions that serve as the bedrock of a just and smoothly functioning society.
Alas, the ill-equipped mind serves as the force that time and again blinds the eye of realizing the actual state of affairs, also known as “false consciousness.” On a personal note, I just cannot fathom the reality of individuals having to guess if they will be able to see the light of another day while many are deliberating about which gender, race, culture, and religion are superior in a world where death is a preordained aspect of human existence. Hence, we must inculcate the “good” and respect the very nature of others regardless of their predestined attributes.
